These images are the final perspectives for critique. I drew them each first by hand and then rendered them in Photoshop. It was my first go at rendering in Photoshop and the images look somewhat flat and cartoon-like so I need to work on adding texture either by hand before I scan the image or in Photoshop.

This drawing shows how the beams would sit on top of the offices and hallway to the offices. The beams only rest over the hallway so that the light is filtered coming from the windows in the vault. This also makes for an interesting element at the top of the walls where the beams end.

These drawing were some ideas I had for the roof garden. The first image is the stairs that lead up to the roof garden. These stairs would be illuminated by the light coming from above and encased in glass to let the light in but have grass growing out of the top of it.

The stairs would be made of concrete and have a floating effect but be supported by copper colored pipes that run perpendicular to the treads.

The second image is how I would like to include wooden planks (mimic the beams) as a place to sit in between the trees and read, eat lunch, meditate, etc.

- Came to the United States, illegally, at age 8. Mother paid a lady to bring her to the states (New Jersey) and pretend to be her mother
- Her parents were already here (crossed the Mexican border)
- At 10 yrs old, her father passed away so Wendy and her mother moved to North Carolina to live with Wendy’s aunt and try to become legal citizens.
- Her mother planned to marry so that they could become legal citizens but got deported in 1997- they had it appealed and got legal status when she was a junior in high school
- Wendy is fluent in both English and Spanish- she translated everything for her mother here in the states- learned how to speak English in Honduras
- They became legal immigrants but not citizens when they got their green cards- great fear of being deported even thought they were legal
- They eventually became US citizens, they had what is called “dual-citizenship” with Honduras and the states – this made traveling a huge challenge
- Wendy wanted to become a citizen so that she could go to college after high school to become a lawyer.
- The United States offers opportunities to become stronger and more independent in this world- she wants to go back to Honduras one day to support the power of the US
- “Everyone’s dream in Latin America is to learn English and move to the US- the country of dreams”
- Adapting to America- began to celebrate American holidays (st patricks day, Halloween, etc…) family is different here- kids grow up and at age 18 become removed from their family, in Honduras family is family and they stay as a close family forever.
- Wendy still has cousins living here in the US as illegal immigrants
- Wendy wants to make a difference and help give illegal immigrants a voice

IAR 212 Computing in Design

The roles of computing in design today are extremely important. The technology we currently are using has come a long way and has helped generate the architecture profession as it is known today. Some of the buildings that have been put up in the last 50 years could not have been done, or at least not nearly as successfully, without the computing technology, like CCAD, that has been developed in the last century. Architects are finally able to see complicated designs and ideas being put together in front of them in 2D and 3D with the help of computing. Computing is more like a tool for Architects to use like a pencil or drafting board rather than something that does the work for them, which in turn leaves room for errors to happen and things to go wrong but the ability to see difficult designs in 3D (even 2D) has brought Architects much closer to perfection than was able to be done 100 years ago.
As the technology in computing progresses, the ability for software to catch errors in designs and drawings will help to break down large-scale projects and help the profession of Architecture progress, as well. Especially with the issue of sustainability on our shoulders, computing will be able an extremely useful tool for measuring and figuring out how sustainability will be played out in buildings of the future. More functional, higher quality, longer lasting, more efficient buildings are in our future with the help of computing

Beyond Limits and Boundaries
The Edward Loewenstein exhibit shows how Loewenstein brought modernism to Greensboro by the influence of modernism on the rest of the world and how it left it’s mark here in Greensboro fifty years later. Edward Loewenstein’s use of materials, light, and color selection are present in this exhibit just as he would have used them himself. The precise choice of angles, different wood finishes, exposed joints, and play on natural light and shadow make the exhibit feel as if it could have been designed by Loewenstein himself. The exhibit did not replicate his work, but rather interpreted his thoughts into an exhibit that showcased modernism in Greensboro.
The structure itself does not try to hide the joints, but rather they are emphasized with exposed wood beams that are held in place by small light green stoppers. The colors and stains of the woods were also very carefully chosen. Some of the wooden beams contained a dark, rich stain, others were a lighter, warm stain, and others were simply left unfinished. In much of Loewenstein’s work, he used these warm woods and stains so it is only appropriate that these beams would be of different stains found commonly in his designs. I also thought the green stoppers were a nice touch. This pale green is also found in many of his designs and was chosen not only for the small stoppers in between the wood beams, but also for much of the text and graphic art through out the exhibit.
Lighting also played a huge factor in this exhibit. The lighting from above was very strategically placed but most importantly the natural light that comes through the large glass windows takes on much of the success of this exhibit. Loewenstein’s structures always dealt with natural light. The exhibit is fortunate enough to be placed in a space with such large windows and natural lighting. It really creates interesting shadows and shades that hit the different angles of the wood beams vertically and horizontally. The transparent plastic that is used for either as backdrops for videos or as placement for the texts and graphics is genius. I don’t recall transparent plastic in many of Lowenstein’s designs, but I think it reinforces his concept of light and shade and shadow in the exhibit perfectly.
The most important part of this exhibit, in my opinion, is at the end, where the exhibit reaches out beyond the perimeter of the enclosed gallery just enough to actually say something. One of Loewenstein’s hallmark design concepts would have to be the way he can bring the outside-in and the inside-out. The use of angles, warm woods, and natural light all come down to this last moment that ties it all together. It states that there are no boundaries; no clear line drawn between black and white, inside and outside. Everything is somehow interlocked into something else. And not just in design or architecture or modernism. But on a larger scale. We should make an affect on the world just as much as the world makes an affect on us. Edward Loewenstein was affected and influenced by modernism in the 1950’s and 60’s all around the world and he brought his knowledge and understanding to Greensboro, North Carolina to share it with others. And that is exactly what this exhibit has done. It has taken the message of Edward Loewenstein and passed it onto others to hopefully gain something and reach out beyond limits and boundaries to create something more.

Phase 3- Intent Narrative

In phase 3 of My Sisters House, in designing an individual suite, I would like to create a safe environment for young mothers and their children to grow and dwell in. I would like for the public spaces to be open and functional for the mothers to learn from one another and build close relationships. In the private spaces, I would like for the mothers to have easy access to all their personal belongings and feel safe in their individual rooms with their small children. I will take full advantage of the height of the rooms to efficiently use as much available space as possible for storage. I also think that in all the spaces, it is important that anything 4 ft or lower be child-safe. This means minimal sharp corners and only things will be stored below 4 ft for children. This will help the children grow in a safe and healthy environment.

Our direction is to be innovative and to build off of each of our charrettes, as well as keeping in mind the intents of our individual architects and designers. Our intent is to create an innovative design, centralized around an open and simple floor plan, allowing for form to follow the function of the space, and reinterpreting moments with elimination of ornamentation.

Best of Intentions Just Won't Cut It-- Charrette

The collection of charrettes that we have done, so far for this project, have lead us in a particular direction. The photographed light charrette helped to really become familiar with the site. Yes, photographing an object on the site helped to measure the different forms of light during different times of the day but for me, it helped me to familiarize myself with the site and where the light hits from what direction on the site. This has led me in the direction of how and where to place windows with intention on the structure. When we built the 1/4” = 1’0” model, this helped us to keep our interior spaces open. We drew circular spaces on the plan to express the idea of openness in what is a smaller structure and to help identify the space relationships in comparison of one space to the other. When we created our moment, we came up with a curve that gave the person experiencing the space a way to know how to enter the building without confusion that we decided to repeat throughout the rest of the building. The materials collage really made us rethink how materials that we wouldn’t have chosen ourselves, how we would have to make them work together in innovative ways. Chrome and fake brick would not have been our first choices as materials for this project, but it forced us to leave our safety zones and take our project in an innovative direction. The idea of innovation and carrying and reinterpreting our intended curve throughout the structure were ideas that we got from our researched artists from the 1930s. Breuer was very inspirational in our design ideas and form following function was very important in the intent of our design.
